How a generation of young, attractive society-types got sold a myth by the mainstream media
By Libby Rall
Once upon a time, some old white women had internalised the patriarchy to such a disturbing extent that they came to the conclusion that “feminism” was for a way for women to be whatever men were: working 8 hours a day, earning their own money, voting, driving cars and sometimes even sleeping with other women (!).
Well, in the 21st century, this won’t wash. Today’s feminism is as much an identity as a dusty manifesto. It is something lived. Something situated right at the heart of the lives of bourgeois women living in imperialist countries doing exactly what they want to do, and not imitating men like those dumb Kurdish women running around with those phallic symbols they call “guns” and defending what their male leaders tell them are their “rights”.
Having children, for example. A feminist of the 1960s would have burnt your bra rather than let you do that. And yet, today it is a feminist act. Especially within the bounds of holy matrimony. And if you’ve got a problem with that, your fedora may be on too tight, bro.
Or your husband having complete control over the family finances. Older feminists tut when they hear that my entire paycheque goes into a bank account I don’t have access to, but they’ve never experienced the complete liberation that comes from not having to worry about money, and being able to ask my husband for it knowing that if he doesn’t give it to me, I’ll cut him off sexually. I’m what we young American feminists call a “boss bitch”. That’s empowered control of your sexuality. You crusty old white feminists should try it sometime.
But if there’s one topic that’s been pissing me off most lately, it’s hearing all these so-called “feminists” talking about the US election. They think women’s rights need to be a central issue in this patriarchal election. Why? We modern, free women are supposed to be in a position to do whatever we want with our lives, and what I want to do is not vote in your white man election! Let Donald Trump be elected, it will be no different to Bernie Sanders. And Clinton can’t win because she’s a woman and only unwoke people vote.
So once again, we find ourselves saddled with this “responsibility” to choose between two crusty old white men. And at what cost? “Political views” have just become another way in which men judge us (or have you all been ignoring the way they’ve been treating Hillary Clinton?), and women return home at night exhausted from the weight of their electoral responsibilities.
The conclusion I keep coming back to is, the sooner women lose these chains, the better.
As Beyoncé points out in her recent masterpiece album, Lemonade:
What’s worse, lookin’ jealous or crazy?
Jealous and crazy.
All like been walked all over lately,
Walked all over lately.
I’d rather be crazy.
